Want to achieve your goals this year? Want to grow and improve? Want to make the most of 2016? This is a little exercise that can keep you on track! Write a letter to your future self and see how much you grow in a year.
Goals, plans, and dreams, they’re all nothing without action! On Monday, I shared with you my battle with depression, and all that went with it. Year after year, I’d find myself stuck in the same place I was the year before. Never seeing my growth or appreciating my journey. Now that I’ve found my way out of depression, I can see how much I have indeed grown and become a better person. Depression has its way of clouding your judgment.
I’m in the process of putting my life back together again. During this time I’m doing a life assessment, asking myself those necessary questions… What do I want out of life? What are my goals? How will I get there? Yesterday I asked myself, what do I want to remember about 2016 in the future? Do I want to remember letting fear keep me from achieving my dreams or feeling stuck? Or do I want to remember the triumphs, the goals achieved, and the dreams that came true. I don’t know about you, but I’m all for the latter.
So in starting a year of purpose and meaning, I decided to write myself a letter, not to my past, but to my future. It was such a freeing experience. I told myself what was going on in my life and what happened in 2015. I told myself what my hopes and dreams were for 2016. I gave myself some encouragement for the future and wished myself well. As I wrote, I imagined reading it at the end of the year with a smile on my face, pondering the year’s adventures and looking to the future. I put the letter in an envelope and put it away for safe keeping. I’ll be opening it at the end of the year and sharing it with you. I encourage you to also write a letter to your future self! It’s a cute little way to travel through time and have a little chat with yourself.
Tips on Writing Your Letter to Your Future Self
- What’s your current state in life? Talk about your current obstacles, fears, and shortcomings you’d like to overcome. Be vulnerable, it’s you!
- What do you want to change in life?
- What habits do you want to get rid of?
- What goals do you want to accomplish for 2016? Why do you want to accomplish these goals and what value will they add to your life?
- Give yourself a little love and encouragement for the future. Even if you don’t achieve every goal, let yourself know it’s okay.
- Really imagine your future self as a real person as you write to them. What are they like, how did they get that way? Are they more positive or confident?
- Don’t write a demanding to do list but try to write more of a love letter.
