What Living in Los Angeles Has Taught Me

Living in Los Angeles

Los Angeles, the city of angels. The land where dreams come true. Three hundred plus days of sunny weather a year, beautiful mountains, sandy beaches, and palm trees so high they brush the clouds. It’s  been a dream.  Today is my fourth anniversary of living in Los Angeles. In honor of the occasion, I wanted to reflect on the many life lessons I’ve learned  from living here. Living in Los Angeles has been great, but it’s also had its ups and downs. Let me just say, if you can make it in LA, you can make it anywhere.

What Living In Los Angeles Has Taught Me

1. Chase After Your Dreams No Matter What

People come here from all over the world  chasing after their dreams. Whether they want to be an actor, a singer, an artist, a designer, or a dancer, this is the city of dreamers.

2. Have a Thick Skin

There are a lot of talented people in this city (there are a lot of people living here period!) You may get rejected in your career, social life, or even trying to rent and apartment. Have a thick skin, perseverance is key!

3. Don’t Be Intimidated by People

There are a lot of rich and famous people in LA, living the high life in big houses and fancy cars. Never feel like you’re less than anybody else.

4. Take Time to Refresh

Sometimes living in Los Angeles can be a lot to deal with and in these times, it’s so invigorating to get out of LA and enjoy the beauty of California. In other words, it’s time to go to Malibu.

5. Be Patient

Let me just start off by saying LA traffic is a… I think you know where I’m going with this… Lots of people, lots of cars, all in such a big rush. Everyone has somewhere “important” to go. Sometimes it’s good to just slow down, be patient, and enjoy the ride.

6. Good Friends Are Hard to Come By

In our lives we will come across many different types people. In LA, you will come across these people on a daily basis. People can be rude, people can be fake, and people can be distant. But then there are those moments when you connect with people who are awesome. They’re awesome, you’re awesome, and you can just be awesome together. You’ll have to go through 101 people to find your true friends.

7. One Pays a Huge Price to Be a Dreamer

You play it safe and do all the normal things in life, never break the rules or make up your own. That is not how a dreamer achieves their dreams. Being a dreamer may bring you embarrassment, hardship, and pain. But the thought of achieving your dreams brings you hope.

8. Have Gratitude

Hard times are hard, sad times are sad, but the saving grace of both, is gratitude. In LA, dreamers often focus on where they want to be instead of being grateful for where they are.

9. Get in Shape

There are a lot of healthy active people in LA. Runners, bikers, skateboarders, gym buffs, and surfers.  You can join a gym or exercise outdoors. Whether it’s hiking Runyon Canyon or running the Santa Monica stairs, get off your butt and exercise. It’s so important to take care of yourself!

10. It’s Cool to Be Different

You will meet the coolest, randomest, awesomest people when living in Los Angeles, especially if you take a trip on over to Venice Beach. And they will all confirm, it’s cool to be different and never let anyone tell you otherwise.

11. Have a Heart for the Poor

As I’ve said, LA is a land of dreamers, many become homeless and are forced to live on the street. Sometimes if someone asks for money, I don’t just give them money, I ask them about themselves and their stories, some are college educated until their jobs let them go, some were in the entertainment industry and were no longer able to support themselves. The poor are human beings, treat them as such.

12. Give Back

Use what you have to be of service. Dog fighting is a really big problem in LA. When I volunteered at my local Humane Society, we’d get pit bulls that were in really bad shape, but it gave me great joy to work with them. Sex slavery is an issue many of us don’t even know about that is happening around the world, including LA. You can support the abolishment of sex slavery by donating to organizations like Justice Speaks.  Ask yourself what you’re passionate about and get involved.

13. Find What Entertains You

LA is the capital of entertainment, it’s hard to not be entertained. Find what entertains you. Find your hobby, your passion, that thing that puts a smile on your face.

14. Enjoy the Scenery of Life and Always Look Around You

LA is a beautiful place, there’s lots to see, endless things to do, and a lot of amazing people to meet. Always make sure you open your eyes and see the beauty around you.

15. See the World

LA is one of the largest cities in the world. People from all over the world come for a visit or move here. You’ll meet so many different people from different cultures, speaking different  languages, and having different outlooks on life. I’ve met people from South America, Asia, Europe, and Africa. I want to travel to these places and embark on a new journey just like the people who have come here.

 16. Have Fun

Honestly, if you can take on LA, you can take on the world. Thank you for four interesting, beautiful, amazing years Los Angeles, it’s been fun.
