Starting a Blog- Discovery List #1| How + Why to Start a Blog

How to Go About Starting a Blog

I achieved #1 on my Discovery List!

What is a Discovery List?

The definition of music to my ears is something that is pleasant or gratifying to hear or discover. I’ve always loved this saying, hence my the name of my blog. Imagine a life that was the epitome of this saying! And so I give you the Discovery List; a journey of self-discovery, pushing past your fears and doing things you never thought you could. Learn, grow, dream!

  • A discovery list is a list filled with 100 or more things you want to do in your life. It’s your dreams, your goals, and your fantasies.
  • It’s a blueprint to your life and your path to self-discovery
  •  It’s a daily guide to who you want to be
  • It gives each day purpose and direction
  • It’s the ultimate to-do list

Number 1 on my discovery list  was starting a blog. Starting a blog has been such an amazing adventure that I wanted to share it with you today. Technically I achieved this task almost 2 years ago, but I just wanted to look back on blogging and how it’s changed my life and encourage others to start blogging too! I started a blog because I felt like I had a message I wanted to share with others. I was formally a full-time jewelry designer and one day I decided to do what made me happy, which was blogging! Before Muzictomyears.com,  I had a blog to promote my jewelry line, but weirdly enough I found myself enjoying writing more than I enjoyed making jewelry. I loved writing about a perspective I had about a situation and getting others reactions. I loved being able to encourage others with uplifting posts. I loved being able to inspire others with my story and my truth!

We all have our own stories; our own little buckets of wisdom. We all have something to give and something to share, and blogging allows you to do just that.  It was so amazing being able to look at my analytics and see flags from all over the world representing people that were reading my blog.  Eventually, I ended up giving up my jewelry business because it just no longer made me happy. I didn’t feel like I was living the life I so desired. I believe that we should live for joy, and so, I followed my gut and started blogging. It’s been almost two years, and I say I made the right choise!

So! With all that said. I’m here today to encourage others to start a blog! So first things first…

Why Start a Blog?

Why Start a Blog

1. Chase After a Bright Future

If there’s anything you want to do in the future, start a blog on the topic! Do you want to be a photographer?  Start a photography blog. Do you want to be a chef?  Make a recipe blog. Do you want to be a world traveler? Start a blog about travel. Starting a blog keeps you inspired, driven, and you can even make a name for yourself. With blogging, you get to chase after your dreams now instead of later.

2. Become a Better You

Blogging has a way of helping you find yourself. It helps you understand yourself better and the things you desire in your life. I’ve watched myself transform through blogging. I found out what I wanted to do with my life! I’ve personally read many blogs from people who seemed to have perfect lives and that didn’t really resonate with me. I wanted to read a blog that had substance and was open about life situations. Since I didn’t find that, I made a blog of my own. I realized that I wanted to help people get to a better state in life through self-love and self-discovery. In the process, I’ve become a better me!

3. Help, Teach, or Inspire Others

Do you know how to do a cool skill? Do you know information that can help others? Do you want to inspire people? Awesome! Help, teach, inspire us! Personally, I have a history with agoraphobia, and I wanted to share my life experiences with others. I blog about self-discovery, pushing past fears, and self-love. As I learn, grow, and dream; I share. I’ve gotten many emails and comments from people saying that I inspired them in some way. In many ways, it makes what I went through with agoraphobia worth it! I can use it for good! And you can use your story, knowledge, or skills to do the same!

How to Start a Blog

How to Go About Starting a Blog?

So, have I convinced you to start a blog? Now you just need to know where to start? I’ll be sharing links to articles and books that helped me. I really recommend reading the books: How to Make Money Blogging, 256 Blog Topic Ideas, and WordPress To Go!

1. Figure Out What You Want to Write About!

What are you all about? What lights your fire? What could you talk about for hours? Write about that! You don’t have to plan too far ahead at the beginning. Too much planning can get you stuck in procrastination… How do I know? Let’s just say… I just know! It helps to can come up with a list of blog post ideas! If you’re still not sure what to write about read this book.

2. Get Hosting for Your Website

I’ll always recommend to everyone, if you’re serious about blogging, get on WordPress! Not wordpress.com but wordpress.org. To do this you’ll need a hosting site such as Blue Host or Host Gator. I personally use Host Gator because they allowed me to pay month to month. I pay under $15 every month! For your own little spot on the internet, that’s pretty good! Here’s More info on blog hosting. If you just want to try blogging out, you can start with the free blogging site by google, blogger.com.

3. Choose a Blog Name and a Domain Name

I obviously went with Muzic To My Ears and I also got Muzictomyears.com. I’m @muzictomyears on all social media as well. I got lucky! Make a list of names you might like for your blog and do a little research to see if they’re taken.  Word of advice, don’t choose something so specific that you can’t expand your blog in the future. Going with your name can work too! More info here!

4. Create Your blog

So now that everything is set up, now it’s time to create your blog. If you’re using wordpress, you can use a free theme to create your blogs layout or shell out $50-$100 bucks for a theme. You can also have your blog and logo design by a graphic designer or web designer; I recommend using Fiver for that. If you’re just starting out, keeping it simple is just fine. Create a simple free blog at first and later on you can add the bells and whistles. You can learn more about that here.

5. Just Start Writing!

Now the fun part! Write! Build a website filled with awesome content. If you play your cards right, you can even make money blogging! I recommend that you read this book to learn more about making money, and helpful tips on how to blog! One thing that is really important about blogging is consistency! This blog planner really helped me keep up with my posts as well as come up with new content and keep me organized.

Blogging has enriched my life in so many ways! I’d love to see it do the same for others! My very first blog post was called Discovery List. I wrote down 100 things I wanted to do in my life, #1 was to start a blog. Now that I’ve achieved that task, I’d love to encourage others to start blogging! I hope these tips help you! And when you do start a blog, be sure to write your own Discovery List so that you can go on your path to self-discovery and achieve things you never thought you could along the way!

Live a life that’a muzic to your ears!

Love,

Zoe Joy
