Stage Fright- Sing on Stage- Discovery List #74

Stage fright

What would happen if a girl with stage fright took the stage to sing? Read on to find out.

This Discovery List adventure is a special one because I face one of my deepest fears, stage fright! Task #74 Sing On Stage, has been on my list since the beginning of the Discovery List; it was one of the original tasks. It’s been sitting on the list for over 2 years, unchecked. I put it on the list because I know how much I love to sing. Two years ago, I believed that my future self would be this fearless magical being that could easily walk on stage and sing her little heart out. Perhaps “two years ago me” was a little optimistic.

If you’ve ever read the original Discovery List, you may have noticed that I refer to myself as a shy girl with a free spirit, I called myself that because that’s how I’d always felt. There were so many things I wanted to do but my fears kept me from doing them, like singing on stage, for instance. My discovery list gave me hope that life could be better than what I’d experienced up until that point. It made me hopeful for the future, and now here I am, 2 years later, the supposed impossible task has been checked off the list!

Performance Anxiety

In my Great Wall blog post, I explained to you a little how my brain works, I’m a daydreamer, which is ironic because I chose to sing, one of my favorite songs, Adele’s “Daydreamer.” Interestingly enough, Adele has a lot of love in China, but why wouldn’t she? She’s Adele for goodness sakes! But I digress, singing on stage was nothing like I imagined it would be. I could have never dreamed up singing on stage at a bar in Yantai, China! But that’s what happened! That’s what can take place when you just let go and go along for the ride!

Face your fears

My friends asked me if I would sing at the bar, they really wanted me to along with Da Bao (the adorable one behind the keys). I, being totally scared yet desperately wanting to do it told them, “I’ll sing tomorrow.” You can guess the only thing I was able to think about the entire day. Teaching an English class, eating lunch, and wandering around Yantai, it consumed my mind. What had I done!? I’m no singer! I’m no performer! I CAN’D DO THIS! Thoughts ugh as these plagued my mind. Until night had come, and I foundation myself in taxi cab on my way to the bar with my friendship. When we got there, I was pretty chill. I talked, laughed, had a sip and I do mean a sip of píjiǔ (Chinese Mandarin pinyin for beer). But the elves started to show the later into the night it got.

The moment had come, I was so afraid, I was shaking as I walked to the stage! But the funny thing about fear is that it’s all a lie! I sat down, and the song played. The longer I was on the stage, the more the anxiety melted away. Finally, I was in the moment, I wasn’t in the past daydreaming about it, I wasn’t in the future like I was before awaiting the dreaded moment I’d face one of my biggest fears! I was just there, present, on stage. No one judged me or put me down like my fear-ridden mind said they would, in return for a shy girl’s song, they gave me nothing but kindness and applause. I let my friends know before that singing on stage was on my Discovery List and they insisted I sing!  I am so grateful for them pushing me to face my stage fright. I could have never done it without them.

Overcoming Stage Fright

Thank you: Jen, Sarah, and Kasieh! Thank you, boys at Blues Bar: Da Lei, Da Bao, and Peter! Thank you, Yantai for your warmth and your love!

I will always appreciate the moment I pushed past my stage fright and sang at a little bar in Yantai, China.
