“Man cannot discover new oceans until he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.” – Andre Gide
Self-discovery is the most important journey a person can take. True Self discovery doesn’t happen instantly, it takes time. When you ask yourself, “who am I?” You’re not going to get back a detailed explanation. Self discovery is like going on a world wind adventure through dark tunnels and high mountain peaks. It’s like sailing the oceans and trekking rocky paths. It’s going through life’s ups and downs, it’s learning life lessons from the things you go through.
Why is self discovery so important? Self discovery unlocks self-love, it allows freedom from fear, and it creates strength within you. It allows you to see the treasure within yourself, therefore allowing you to see the treasure in others. It’s who you are and who you want to be. Self-discovery can be fun at times, and painful at others; you grow as a person, you learn new things, and you gain a deeper understanding of the world and those around you. I think the most important part of self discovery is when you put together what you’ve learned, the skills you’ve gained, and the things you care about, and you form a dream.
Dream, passion, desire, purpose; whatever you want to call it, it’s that thing that lies at the center of your being. It’s the first thing you think about in the morning and the last thing you think about when you go to bed. It’s what keeps you inspired each day and it’s what puts a smile on your face. The ultimate goal of self-discovery is finding this life purpose. We all have an innate desire to find ourselves and why we were put on this earth. Some of us already know and some of us are still figuring it out, and that’s okay. Before we all find the reason we were put on this earth, and gain an understanding of who we are, we each have to go on our own path of self discovery.
I want you to close your eyes and imagine that you’re sitting on a beach looking out to the waves. Each wave is vastly different and unique. Each of those waves represent different lives that you could lead. They each have their own story and their own path to the shore. In one life maybe you’re a teacher, in another maybe you’re a scientist, and in another maybe you’re a dancer; each of these waves are different just like each of these lives are different. You can choose any of these waves, you could turn out to be any of these people, I can’t tell you which one, you have to figure it out for yourself. All I know is, you’re you, and I believe you’re you for a reason.
There’s this one wave coming towards the shore. It’s perfect. You can’t take your eyes off of it. It sparkles with the light of the sun, it’s crashing water makes a sound unlike heavenly music. That’s your wave, that’s your life. You just have to have the courage to ride it, and live it. A path of self discovery is a lot like these waves. You have to choose your wave in life, maybe you’ll try out more than one, but eventually, you’ll find your wave; and you’ll find your purpose.
The things we go through, even the bad things, make us who we are. I believe that when all is said and done, we’ll look back at all the little moments in our lives , and we’ll thank them for shaping and molding us into the person we were meant to be. The bad things made us strong, the confusing things made us patient, the hopeless things made us wise. Every moment of self discovery will lead you to the best version of yourself and the very reason you were put on this earth. I think it’s time for you to start your journey, and find your wave!
