Day 1. Movie Night
30 Day Self Discovery Challenge Day 1!
Hey you! I just want to tell you that you’re super awesome for going on this path of self discovery. I hope day one of the challenge was exciting for you! Have you said your affirmations? Did something new? Wrote in your journal? I hope so! The first day of anything is exciting. You’re stepping into a new adventure!
Fo me, the adventure is just beginning. Today was a day like any other; only I promised that I would do something new. And so after some thinking, I knew what I would do. My church was having a ladies movie night. I know it might not sound like much, but I knew it’s what I was supposed to do just the same. It was a great night and I even reconnected with a friend.
Funny enough my uber driver to the movie night told me about a venue he volunteers at. I talked his ear off about my little challenge and he told me I should check out the venue and that it could be a new thing I try… So it looks like that will be tomorrow’s adventure. Stay tuned and I’ll tell you how it all plays out then! But for now, I have to run, it’s time to jot it all down in my journal.
I just love how tonight went… When you open yourself up to adventure, it’ll come right to you. Where will doing something new every day take you?
Day 2. Go on a Dating Website
30 Day Self Discovery Challenge Day 2!
Today I relearned that sometimes things don’t go the way you planned. It’s a lesson I know well and yet it pops up here and there as a reminder. Yesterday I knew what I would do, and I planned it out, but it fell through. Let’s just say schedules were changed, the day got long, things got difficult, so it didn’t happen. I accepted that, but I only had one problem… I didn’t know what new thing I would do for the day! It had gotten too late! So I had to think! What could I do!?
In times of trouble (such as these) I always ask my therapist what to do AKA, my mother. Frantically I ran to her and asked, what in the world do I do!? She said, “I don’t know. Go on a dating website.” That’s ridiculous, I thought… I LOVE IT! And so that’s just what I did.
The moral of the story. I knew I had to do something new for the day, and even though things didn’t go the way I planned, I still had fun! And I walked away with a new funny story of the time I tried out a dating website.
Where will doing something new every day take you?
Day 3. See Steve Martin Speak
30 Day Self Discovery Challenge Day 3!
Day 3 was a good day for trying something new. I just love how my eyes are opening to the opportunities for adventure around me. I was wondering what in the would I would do for the day. I was thinking so long and hard my eyes were crossed! And then it hit me! DUUHHH Zoe! You already have something new to do. It was in the works for months! I would see a certain distinguished speaker. Let me explain; a few months ago, I began working for my church on a monthly basis. Our building was being rented out by an organization that hosts different speakers each month. The last speaker was Diana Nyad, the first person confirmed to swim from Cuba to Florida; I really enjoyed her! And for the month of January, the speaker was none other than Mr. Steave Martain. After we served the guests and all the work was taken care of, we all listened to his speech and interview; we even got serenaded as he played his banjo. It was a great night and definitely something new!
Day 4. Beauty Treatment
30 Day Self Discovery Challenge Day 4!
Today I didn’t pressure myself to do something super cool! I learned that the new things in life can be as simple as a nice little beauty treatment you’re never tried before. It had gotten late and I was about to stress myself out trying to come up with a new thing to do, but I realized I already had! I tried out a rice hair rinse. I’ve heard a lot about the benefits of rice rinces and I finally gave it a try. In the winter, my hair gets super dry and unmanageable like most, I really needed to do something. Sometimes newness is as simple as doing something to care for yourself! I’m seeing now that this challenge isn’t just about doing cool stuff, it’s about doing stuff for you!
Day 5. New Movie
30 Day Self Discovery Challenge Day 5
I loved today! Today I saw a new movie called Hidden Figures. Heard of it? I can honestly say that it was one of the most touching, beautiful movies I’ve ever seen. Not only did these women have racial hindrances but they were also well, women! And even still, they defied the odds and finally made history. I went into the bathroom after the movie and cried in the stall. It hit me, just being able to go into a bathroom with everyone else is a luxury these women did not have. This world is not perfect, and we sure have far to go but we have made progress and I see that more and more every day.
Day 6. Volunteer at a conference
30 Day Self Discovery Challenge Day 6
Today was a beautiful day, I went to a conference at my church and I also volunteered. I met people from all over that had one big thing in common, their love for God.
Day 7. NOTHING
30 Day Self Discovery Challenge Day 7
NOTHING! I did nothing! How did I let this happen!? But for an overly deep analytical person like me, nothing can be something. Today was super hectic, it was non-stop go go go! Normally when I don’t achieve something on my todo list, I’ll stay up until it’s done! But today was different. It had gotten late and I hadn’t done anything new. I did a lot of stuff, but nothing new! And so my mind began to go into overdrive pondering what to do, but somewhere else in my mind, I’m not sure where, observed my racing thoughts and simply replied, do nothing. The thoughts stopped, everything became peaceful, and probably for the first time in my life, I gave myself permission to do nothing. And boy did I enjoy it!
Day 8. Cash in Pennies
30 Day Self Discovery Challenge Day 8
Today I did something I actually have done before but not since I was a kid. It was late and I walked over to the store after a busy day. Before I started walking, I picked up 2 big jars of pennies I had on my desk and put them in a bag. I’ve collected pennies since I was 6. I always loved the idea that one little penny could turn into an army of pennies, and that army of pennies could be worth something so much more that one penny’s value. And yet, people don’t like the penny. Pennies lay forgotten under beds, in pockets, and in between couch cushions. But not me; I’ve brought my little penny-saving habit into adulthood. When I was a kid I would save up my pennies for a while and then take them to a Coinstar kiosk. It was always so magical to me how my little pennies would become ten, twenty, even thirty dollars! To me, $30 was a fortune. I’d take my money and buy myself a new toy. This time, I ended up getting $15 from my pennies. And just like when I was a kid, my pennies are going to pay for tomorrow’s adventure.
Day 9. Da Poetry Lounge
Today’s new thing goes back to the first day of the challenge. I wrote this for day 1’s diary entry: ” Today was a day like any other; only I promised that I would do something new. Stay tuned and I’ll tell you how it all plays out then!” I did something totally new for me. I went to Da Poetry Lounge with 2 friends after being told about it by my uber driver on a Monday, the first day of the challenge. I wanted to go the next day but it didn’t work out, I decided
Going to the theater was supposed to be day 2 of the challenge, but it didn’t work out. But a week went by and I tried again, and so I went to Da Poetry Lounge with 2 friends, it would be my new thing for day 9 of the challenge.
Everything worked out perfectly, I went with the people I was meant to go with. It’s a super popular venue but we still got parking right in front of the theater, NEVER HAPPENS, THIS PLACE IS IN HOLLYWOOD. I’m so glad I shared a night of watching talented individuals share their heart with these 2 ladies! It’s like everything came into alignment! It may sound simple but it was an amazing night. The challenge itself has been amazing and it’s changing me. And so we had to snap a pick to remember the night and we invited the uber driver in it with us.
Day 10. Get a Nose Piercing
30 Day Self Discovery Challenge Day 10
This would have to be my favorite task I achieved on this challenge, mainly because it’s on my discovery list! Plus I’ve wanted to do this since I was 15. I got my nose pierced! This would have to be the craziest thing I’ve done on this challenge! But this challenge has been showing me, those things I’ve always wanted to do, are available to me, you just have to go after it!
Day 11. Sketch
30 Day Self Discovery Challenge Day 11
Today I did something that’s not necessarily new. It’s something from my past that I haven’t done in a long time. I loved hose moments when I revisit something I once loved. I grabbed some colored pencils and some paper and I began to sketch. You see, when I was younger, I wanted to be a fashion designer, but my dreams changed. But my love for sketching never did.
Day 12. Make a video I’ve wanted to make for a long time
30 Day Self Discovery Challenge Day 12
From the start of this blog, my one goal was to do the things I’ve always wanted to do and share them with my readers. I wanted to live a life free of fear. I wanted to encourage other people to live the life they truly desired, and do things they never thought they could. Today I got to put that dream in motion. My very first blog post was called the Diacovery List; I wrote down 100+ things I wanted to do in my life and I vowed that I would do them 1 by one. I dreamed that when I did achieve a task, I’d check it off my Discovery List and make a video sharing the experience. Today I made the video of my experience getting my nose piercing. This blog is becoming exactly what I always hoped it would, a place for creative expression and connecting with others.
Day 13. Teach people how to hula hoop
I loved today. Southern California has been mysteriously cold and rainy so when we had a sunny day, I was out the door with my hula hoops in hand. I’d been cooked up all week and I’d been itching to go outside. So I went over to the park and with no hesitation, I started hula hooping, just and average day in my life… A grown woman with a hula hoop out in public. Yep. As I was having some fun under the sun, a woman came over, she was drawn by my hoops. She told me that she used to hula hoop when she was a kid back in the 60’s San so I invited her to join me and I gave her a few pointers. Another woman joined us. It was so fun teaching people how to hula hoop! It really does make you happy. And it made me really happy to be able to share it with other people.
Day 14. Apply to an internship
Today took an interesting turn. This challenge is proving to not only be fun but also productive. Let me explain; I was scrolling through Instagram when something caught my attention. A surfer girl Instagram account I follow was looking for an intern. Now, I wouldn’t call myself a surfer girl with all of 5 times I’ve stood up on a surf board but it caught my eye. Plus I’ve always loved the idea of surfing, it’s just beautiful to watch, I’d love to be a part of it. I was about to keep scrolling when it hit me… Why not! What’s there to loose. So I applied, talked to the woman, and she forwarded my resume. Hey, why not!? I could become an intern working with surfer girls. Now I’d say that’s something new!
Day 15. Dance like no one’s watching
Today was a hard day for me. Some things happened that left me feeling little shaken. I was at home and I felt those negative emotions welling up… I knew that if I didn’t get out, they’d take me over, so, despite the drizzling weather, I went out. I decided I’d hoop a little. Me, my hoops, and my chihuahua went over to a park. I sat gabby down on a blanket. Played a song, and just went for it. I’ve never hooped like that in my life, it was a dance. A dance to let go, or maybe to take in. All I know is, when I stopped dancing I was happy. Funny enough, right when I stopped, it began to rain. I grabbed gabby, my hoops and my umbrella, and we made a run for it. The rain poured down on us, we were soaked! Then the wind picked up and it blew my umbrella up. It must have been quite a funny sight seeing a big haired girl running down the street with a chihuahua and hula hoops in hand! But I didn’t care, it was worth it. Not even the pouring rain could steal my joy, it was a magical day and a magical dance.
Day 16. Learn a new hula hoop move
What a long day today was, and the time had come to do something new. But what? I racked my brain for a while on what to do. And I thought to myself, this week seems to be all about my hula hoops, so I thought, why not learn a hoop move that I’ve been afraid to learn. It has a lot of names but let’s just call it a horizontal cat eye with left hand tracing and a turn. Now, do you see why I was afraid to learn it!? That sounds hard as hell! But what ev’s! I got my hoop and began to practice. After a few drops, a few owies, and a few hits in the face… I did it! It’s amazing how we put off things that seem a little scary when in actuality it’s totally doable! You just have to do it!
Day 17. Hula Hoop Teacher?
Well! We’re just doing a whole lot of stuff we never thought we would do! Some days on this challenge, I wonder if I’m doing this new stuff just to keep up with the challenge or if they’re actually things I continually wanted to do, but just put it aside. Who knows! Anyways, I’ve been hooping for about 6 months now. Ever since the first day my friend Sabrina gave me a hula hoop, I’ve probably hooped every day since! Today I thought back to the last couple of days hooping; like how I got to teach those ladies in the park, or how that group of people saw me hooping and asked if I was a professional. I love sharing hooping with others! And so I thought… Why not teach a class!? And so today, I put the wheels in motion to do just that!
Day 18. Cut Bangs
Something new… Something new… Something new… I know! I’ll cut bangs. And so I did 😉
Day 19. Play the piano
Today was a long day of running errands and birthday shopping for my grandmother. Nothing new was done. So I looked around my place and my eyes glued to the keyboard. No one really plays it, it just sits there collecting dust. Yep, I thought. I sat down and played a masterpiece. Well more like an out of tune, off key, tone-deaf disaster. But it was a masterpiece if you use your imagination. Hey! This blog may be called Muzic To My Ears but that doesn’t mean I’m musically inclined… Though I try my best!
Day 20. Teach Grandma to hoop!
It was grandma’s birthday and so I did something I’ve wanted to do for a long time… Get her to hula hoop! Every time we’ve gone to visit her, I’ve forgotten to bring my hoops, but not this time! Just a little background on grandma, she has dementia, so some days are better than others. But it was such a blessing, the hula hoops gave her so much spirit. She remembered when her and her sisters used to hula hoop together. She remembered the movement the to get the hula hoop started without me telling her. Another thing about grandma, she’s very vain. She doesn’t like looking silly so when she didn’t get it right away she put it down. But she loved watching! It was such a joy connecting with her in that new way.
Day 21. Organize a free hug protest!
I remember when I first moved to California, we were driving through Burbank and something caught my attention. There’s so much going on in LA, it’s hard to focus on just one thing, but this really caught my attention. I saw a girl standing on the sidewalk, with a huge smile on her face. She was holding a “free hug” sign. I must have seen her for a second as we drove past and even when she was out of sight, I continued to look back as if I was staring at her. I never forgot that day. I told myself that I had to do that one day! I never forgot it, though I didn’t think of it often either. I guess I just kept it in a certain area of my brain for safe keeping. I knew I would be one of those people that held a free hug sign some day, and today the wheels were put into motion.
Day 22. Walk Around and get lost.
Sometimes getting lost isn’t a bad thing… Sometimes a delay isn’t an inconvenience. Sometimes it’s okay to live life like your on an adventure instead of a mission. And so after a stressful day, I grabbed my little chihuahua and we went for a little adventure and got lost.
Day 23. Go to a new restaurant
Am I the only one that falls into habit? The same restaurants and the same food. Today I decided to shake it up and go to a quaint little vintage breakfast spot called Foxes. It was a new and delicious.
Day 24. Business Plan
Day 25. Fast negativity
It was a beautiful day where I said no to everything negative and hello to positivity. That’s the happy fuzzy version of the day… It was hard! I had no idea how many random seemingly harmless negative thoughts can pop into your head in a day! But it was a great lesson on how to live each day.
Day 26. New Hair Do
Random fact about me… I’m obsessed with the 70’s! The fashion, the freedom, the music, THE HAIR! And so with the 70’s in mind, I braided my hair and added earthy beads to the end. 70’s indeed.
Day 27. Watch the sunrise
Surprisingly, something I’ve never done is intentionally wake up early to greet the sun, but today was that kind of day. It just hit me that I should. And so I got my lazy bones out of bed, through on a maxi dress, some converse and a coat and Gabby the chihuahuah and I were off. We sat for a while bet then there it was, slowly rising. It was beautiful.
Day 28. Be a part of a protest!
What a night for justice! Yesterday, I was a part of my first protest, lead by my amazing brother @jordanblack. With one hand holding a poster, and the other shooting up a peace sign, it was a pleasure to walk with this group of beautiful humans. It was crazy to see how many people didn’t even know what sex trafficking was. It was humbling to come in contact with people who supported the cause. It’s modern day slavery and it HAS to stop! What kind of change could a little group of justice junkies do with a bunch of signs walking down a busy California street? It could potentially change everything.
Day 29. Find a new hangout spot
I told you about Da Poetry Lounge on day 2 and day 9… It has since become a place I enjoy going frequently. A new thing became a familiar thing. My favorite thing about listening to poetry…. It can be funny, it can be deep, it can be crude. But it’s mainly people bearing their souls and sharing their human experience. And for that moment, you can just shut up and listen. You forget your own situation for a second and experience theirs.Day 30.
Day 30. Make a life changing decision
Life changing decisions… Once upon a time I made a decision to do something new every day and I can honestly say, I’ve changed! I’ve become more bold, more willing to do things outside of my comfort zone, and taking risks don’t seem so risky! But the thing about life changing decisions is that they can change everything. You have no idea what will happen once the decision is made and you’ll regret not making it! So sometimes you just have to take a step of faith, no matter how scary it may be… This challenge taught me that… China here I come!
