Learn how to surf- Discovery List
What is a Discovery List?

The discovery list is a new kind of bucket list ! It’s a list filled with 100 or more things you want to do in your life. It’s your dreams, your goals, and your fantasies… It’s all about pushing past your fears to get to your dreams and doing what you can today to achieve them!

Learning how to surf was #ll on my discovery list. I’ve wanted to surf ever since I moved to California 4 years ago. I’ve definitely made my attempts, but for some reason it never happened. I’m a true believer that everything happens for a reason and there is always a special timing for the things we do in our lives; and so I waited. But I never stopped thinking about it, I new one day I would surf. I don’t know what it was about surfing that drew me in;  It just looked so beautiful; and almost impossible.

For a while I’d know about an organization called The Black Surfers collective. On October 18th, a week after my 20th birthday. The black Surfers Collective was having a meet up! I signed up along with 2 friends (who happened to be Asian, long story.) When we got to Santa Monica Beach, they supplied us with boards and rash guards. Not that many people came that day so we each got our own instructors. They taught us everything from ocean safety to paddling and popping up on the board. It was a little scary as my instructor led me to the ocean, but I felt safe. I didn’t stand up on my first try, or my second, I don’t even think I got up on my third or fourth. Honestly, it was so fun, I just lost track. My instructor was patient with me and helped me to finally stand up. I had no idea what my face was doing because I couldn’t focus on anything but surfing, but I’m sure it had a huge smile painted on it. After the instructors helped us, they let us surf by ourselves. After hours of pop ups, wipe outs, laughs, and smiles; it was time to go home. I remember being insanely tired and sore from all that paddling, but I know that surf stoked smile never left my face.

I can honestly say that it was a life changing experience. There’s really nothing else like it! It’s a feeling I can’t quite describe, but I know I’m hooked to it. Yep, I’m surf stoked!  I can’t wait to do it again, and again, and again. Thank you Black Surfers Collective and Surf Bus Foundation for what you do!
