How to be beautiful? The media has long defined beauty and it’s time we defined it ourselves. They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, yet every time you look in a magazine or on television you see that the world has a standard of beauty. But what is beautiful really? Is beautiful the tall thin girl on the front of a magazin? Is it the sexy curvy woman modeling lingerie? Is it the muscular sporty athlete? Or is it the young free spirited girl being influenced by it all? From childhood women are exposed to the idea of beauty. It seems there’s an inner desire in all of us to be beautiful, and yet some of us are praised for our outward appearance and some of us aren’t. How can beauty be defined by such limited factors? We’re all so different; tall, short, plump, and thin, long hair, short hair, blue eyes, brown, from the lightest skin, to the darkest. What is beauty? Read on as 12 girls from around the world answer this daunting question:
How to Be Beautiful
“Beauty is being completely true to who you are. It’s in the acceptance and unconditional love of your whole self. I believe beauty shines brightest when we allow ourselves the freedom to express who we are. This expression of our unique, extraordinary, weird and wonderful ways is such pure beauty, that can be both seen and felt. And when we have the courage to share who we are with the world, we inspire others to do the same.” – Helen Janneson Bense
“Many women believe that in order to be beautiful, we MUST invest in material products such as lipstick, eyeliner, diet shakes, surgery, and foundation. We should ALWAYS embrace ourselves especially our imperfections. Our perceptions of beauty have slowly started to deconstruct. I am UNIQUELY Monique and you should be UNIQUELY yourself no matter what anyone else says.” – Monique Gray

“What makes a person beautiful? When she looks at a tree, a child, the sky… and her eyes melt as her soul gets lost in this pure beauty… When her smile tells the tale of her true essence… When she offers no judgement to those she meets… And she is content in this very moment right now. That person is infinitely beautiful.” – Steph Sage
“I believe beauty is an inside job full stop!!! It’s about having a kind soul, thinking about others and living a life full of compassion. Before you ever say a bad word about anyone you should stop and think about how it would make you feel if it was being said about you. I believe all of us are beautiful in our own unique way and that all of us women should encourage each other and lift each other up with genuine compliments and kindness! Make sure that you smile a lot, laugh loudly and maintain a generous spirit!” – Hayley Shaw-McGuinness
“I think it’s important for women to explore the beauty that they are born with naturally. We should also learn to accept that we may not be considered very beautiful by society’s ideals and that is okay; that does not shape who we are as women. Our self-love should not be based on our outer beauty because when our inner beauty shines brightly, it upstages perfect teeth and a symmetrical face any day.” -Keisha Charmaine
“I think everyone is beautiful in their own way, but the important that is that they should recognize that in themselves first before other people do. Being absolutely totally themselves – flaws, flab, imperfections and all – and being able to not only accept but EMBRACE all of that, to me makes a person beautiful. And nothing will ever beat a beautiful beautiful heart. Kindness and love are one of the most beautiful things in the world & if you know someone that has that, then you have found true beauty.” – Elaine Abonal
“When I lived in Charlotte I got all dressed up and spent loads of money at Sephora on makeup, staying up to date on the latest trends. I moved to India years ago and couldn’t shop for makeup plus it was too hot to wear any. Now, I never think about it and truly think my face looks fresher without it. It’s fun to use it only for special occasions! Bonus, my boyfriend is a little hippie who thinks I look better without makeup, and I’m finally starting to believe him.” – Rachel Jones
“Beauty is the way that you treat other people. When you are kind and helping other people out, that’s when I feel inner beauty radiates and makes you truly shine. No amount of money that you ever spend on yourself will ever come close to the satisfaction of a beautiful deed that you do for someone else.” – Melissa Connell
“I think what makes a person beautiful is confidence, being accepting and genuine to who you are as an individual.” – Connie Cao
The ability to accept one’s flaws & embrace it. They might be in the process of changing themselves but in that process it’s important to accept yourself for being ‘You’. People come in different shapes & sizes. What makes an individual beautiful is when they’re confident about themselves.” – Gia Kashyap
“I think the most beautiful thing in the world is when women lift each other up and walk the earth together as empowered beautiful women. We can give love and friendship to each other and not put each other down. We don’t have to compare ourselves to other women or envy our sisters but embrace them as we embrace ourselves. We can come together with all of our differences and paint the world with our beautiful smiles. – Zoe Joy
