So last week, I told you the story of an achieved Discovery List Task: Travel Abroad for the First Time. So if you read that post, you know know that China was the final destination! How could I go to China without a visit to the Great Wall? So thankfully we had a 12-hour layover in Beijing before our flight Yantai. In this Discovery List adventure, I got to check #11 off the list! I was so excited to do so! But, task #11 was not just to visit the Great Wall! It’s actually to hula hoop on the Wall! Let me explain…

Hooping on the Great Wall (1)

If you’re an avid reader of the Muzic to my ears blog then you’d know that hula hooping is one of my favorite hobbies. In the future, I’ll write a post going into detail about the many benefits of hula hooping for mind body and spirit. But for now, let’s call it a form of creative expression. To me, hopping on the Great Wall was that special moment of here I am, this is how far I’ve come. That’s why I put it on the list!

Here’s a little fact about me, I’m a day dreamer, whenever I want to do something on my list, I see it in my head first in a dreamy and romantic way. There’s nothing wrong with that, but I often have to learn the hard way that life doesn’t go the way you see it in your head. You’d think I’d get it by now but naturally, hooping on the Great Wall was no exception!

Visiting the Great Wall

So without further ado ladies and gentlemen, this is the real-life tale of hooping on the Wall… It was hot! And I mean this black girl’s skin was melting to hot fudge, hot! There were a lot of people. Not an overwhelming amount or anything but it wasn’t like those beautiful pictures you see on Google of an empty wall and a clear sky. Also, those steps! They want to kill you! These were not evenly spaced, same-sized steps, I want you to imagine going up this very steep staircase with me. Ready? Okay! Step, little step, smaller step, big step, little step again, BIG ASS STEP, tiny step, BIG ASS STEP AGAIN! So anytime I thought I was in the groove and figured out the mystical pattern of the steps, boom! There was a randomly sized step that was bigger than I expected and I’d fall. Here I am, sweating and gasping for air while being lapped by 80-year-old Chinese women. The way up was not cute!

Was it, the romantic, chill, graceful, trek up the Great Wall I imagined? No! No, it wasn’t! But without the help of my over-active imagination, it was magical! Gorgeous views, amazing history, and filled with stories of the people that come from all over the world to see it. One story it got to witness was a hula hooping girl. To be honest, by the time I got to one of the beacon towers on a high point of the mountain, I felt exhausted and a little shy because people were around, but with the encouraging words of my friends “come on don’t be a bitch” I hooped it!

Hula hoop in china

Of course, I’ll let the video (above) speak for itself, but it was a dream to hoop on the Great Wall. While traveling, I was really worried the hoop might get taken in the security check when they kept running my bag through. I was also worried I might throw the hoop off the Wall (which it almost did)! Then I got all shy when a bunch of people wanted to watch… but all in all, it was a dream to have that moment. I loved that it was nothing like I thought it would be. But in the end, nothing could top being able to check it off my list! There was a period there where nothing was being checked off and I felt as though my life was passing me by, but a little dream came true on that Wall! And from that moment, I was hopeful, but I could have never foreseen the adventures that were waiting for me in China! Stay tuned for the story to unfold!
